EMMANUEL DUNAND,PHILIPPE LOPEZ/AFP/Getty Images The 2018 FIFA World Cup continues on Sunday with another pair of knockout stage matches featuring Spain vs. Russia and Croatia vs. The Spanish, winners of the 2010 event, are hoping to parlay their Group B success by navigating past the Russians. History is not on Spain’s side considering the country has never beaten a World Cup or Euro host before. It would be shocking if that trend continued today, however, since the home nation is making its only Round of 16 appearance in the post-Soviet Union era after placing second in Group A. The Danes and Croatians are also making a rare appearance outside of the group stage. Denmark advanced beyond it for the first time since 2002 by way of their runner-up performance in Group C, while Croatia has been waiting even longer—having not been to the knockout round since finishing third two decades ago—but finally broke through by dominating Group D with three consecutive victories.

Oddsmakers expect that both undefeated group winners will remain unbeaten on Sunday. La Furia Roja has been installed as the day’s largest favorite with -170 odds, meaning bettors would have to risk $1.70 to net $1 on them winning in regulation. The Sbornaya aren’t getting much respect despite earning more points than their foe during the group stage, coming in as +500 underdogs, a bet that would return $5 for every $1 wagered on the nation winning after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. The day’s second match isn’t expected to be much closer, with the Blazers deservedly opening as -120 chalk. The Danish Dynamite haven’t lost yet at this World Cup, but two draws—including one to Australia—and a narrow 1-0 victory over Peru hasn’t earned them much respect, an issue that is reflected in their +400 odds. Will the Spanish and Croatians keep rolling into the quarterfinals, or will the Russians and Danes find a way to defy the odds and pull off a big upset or two to cap off a thrilling World Cup weekend? Jon Price of has provided his predictions for both contests and you won’t want to miss who the pro handicapper has advancing past the Round of 16.
