Dolby Digital Plus. E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus) is an enhanced coding system based on the AC-3 codec. It offers increased bitrates (up to 6.144 Mbit/s), support for even more audio channels (up to 15.1 discrete channels in the future), and improved coding techniques (only at low data rates) to reduce compression artifacts, enabling lower.
As per thread title (and i appologise if this is in the wrong section!)- What's the difference between these two formats (if any), and can my current amp ( A Denon AVR-3802) decode it/read it!? Got a few HD titles that list this as the sourround sound format used- But i've no clue what the difference is to normal Dolby digital (there must be some!) Won't surprise me one bit if my current amp can't decode it, but i'm pained to down the Denon yet- as there's nothing wrong with it (even though i'd like to able of take advantage of the new sound formats!!!), and i'd bet it's worth nothing 2nd hand either! If you're talking about blu ray then Dolby Digital plus is encoded as an extension to the standard Dolby Digital 'core' soundtrack - if you're using an optical digital connection, then the core version is what you'll be getting (which is still a bit better than DVD as it has a higher bit rate). Depending on the the player, you may be able to use the amp's multi-channel analogue outputs - the player does the decoding and then converts it to analogue. Hd dvd is a little bit different, in that it's treated as a soundtrack in itself as opposed to the core plus exension approach used by blu ray.
